Kindergarten Curriculum

Your child will play! The play is carefully and thoughtfully planned and prepared around the child’s individual needs and developmental growth. The Kindy program aims to develop intellectual, physical, social and emotional development through various learning areas. Children will learn skills, knowledge and ideas through their play. With Kindergarten being one of the first steps from home to school, we build on existing knowledge, skills and interests. Our program is supportive but it is also challenging. It is based around a balance of:

  • Child-directed play – The child chooses how, when, with what and with whom to engage.
  • Teacher-guided play – The teacher manages the play environment to achieve specific outcomes.
  • Intentional teaching – The teacher plans and delivers explicit instruction to achieve specific outcomes.

Planned and incidental learning occurs throughout the day as a whole class, in small groups and individually.
We are steered by two important documents – The Early Years Framework and The Kindergarten Curriculum Guidelines.

Walker Learning

Walker learning is a holistic approach to teaching and learning that has an emphasis on developing students to become independent learners, critical and creative thinkers, and build resilience and a sense of self.

Over the last six years Vasse Primary School has implemented this Play-Based approach across our Kindergarten – Year 2 classrooms.

The Walker Approach provides our students with a balance of investigative play based learning and hands on experiences, that is supported with our structured and explicit teaching programs. Through this approach we have a strong focus on building Literacy and Numeracy skills, whilst allowing students to practise applying these skills to real life situations.

Our aim is to develop the whole child and prepare them for the future by fostering soft skills such as communication, problem solving, conflict resolution, decision making, leadership, teamwork, and responsibility.

Following a full and enjoyable experience in Kindergarten or Pre-Primary, our Transition Program enables the children to make a positive transition into their next year level.
